These food grade polyethylene tanks are designed to be permeable to oxygen, as are traditional oak barrels. Both provide a micro oxygenation environment that supports the gradual “softening” of wine with age. While functionally similar to the traditional oak barrel these tanks offer a number of advantages including improved hygiene, lower maintenance (no topping), longer service life, space efficient storage, substantially reduced overall cost and a neutral environment for use of oak adjunct products.

“Skins” are a disc of polyurethane foam sealed into an inert polyurethane membrane that float on the wine surface. They serve to block direct uptake of oxygen at the wine surface and greatly reduce or eliminate oxygen dependent reactions at the wine surface. They are flexible and roll up for insertion through a manway or side door. Available as options for Flextank vessels, custom units can be made for most wine tanks.

Flextank’s 900 gallon open fermenter is rotationally-molded in super tough, food contact, high-density polyethylene. This material does not interact in any way with the juice or wine, is taint free and is very easy to clean, as tartar and other deposits from the wine don't stick to the surface and the material is not stained by red wine pigments.
